The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has told Sri Lanka that the draft Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill retains and expands shortcomings found in the Prevention of Terrorism Act. OHCHR cited concerns including vague offences, restrictions on freedoms of expression and assembly, broad executive powers, prolonged detention without effective judicial review and risks of torture or enforced disappearance.
