The World Bank has reclassified Sri Lanka as an upper-middle-income economy from July 1 after its 2025 GNI per capita rose to US$4,670, slightly above the threshold. The bank cautioned that the upgrade remains fragile because debt, poverty, external risks and slower projected growth could still undermine the recovery.
